After the tour, about a dozen of us walked to lunch next door in the legislature building.  Our tour guides Doug Brown, Reference Unit Supervisor in the Archives, and Taylor Wolford, Outreach Librarian in the Government & Heritage Library, were ready for us with interesting documents. In the archives, we saw the original Sanborn maps of Raleigh, the will of John Rex whose bequest founded Rex Hospital in 1894 (still thriving in Raleigh today) and other documents. In the library, Taylor shared newsletters and meeting minutes of the Wake County Genealogical Society! Mark your calendars and make your plans to attend two weeks from today:  Where:    Johnston County Heritage Center ,  241 East Market Street, Smithfield, NC 27577 When:   Saturday, February 11, at 10am Let's gather in person and check out the repository of records for Wake County settlers and ancestors before there was even a Wake County! Prior to its formation in 1770, the land we think of as Wake lay partially in Johnston county (also Cumberland and Orange, stories for another day).   The Johnston County Heritage Center holds approximately 2,500 books, 800 reels of microfilm, 300 maps/atlases, 100,000 photographic images, 600 private collections of books and papers, and vertical files on genealogy, biography, and local history. Calling all WCGS members and interested parties for our first face to face meet up of 2022. As we are a service organization, this first one will involve a service project! Please join the Wake County Genealogical Society as we participate in the Raleigh Day of Service: Historic Oberlin Cemetery Clean Up on April 9, 2022 from 9am to noon. This is a perfect opportunity for us to gather in a way we have not had an opportuity to in over 2 years!  Perhaps we can even go to lunch after, if a group would like to do so.  This is a regular activity and so is well organized by the Friends of Oberlin Village.  Bring your own work gloves, closed toe shoes, garden cutters, and perhaps a tarp. And don't forget your water bottle! No need to register, just show up ready to help preserve history - rain or shine!
